Nurofen Rapid (Ibuprofen)

Nurofen Rapid is an NSAID that provides analgesic and antipyretic effects across several common conditions.

• Headache: Reduces pain intensity and improves comfort.
• Dental pain: Alleviates post‑extraction or procedural discomfort.
• Musculoskeletal pain: Diminishes aches associated with strains, sprains and minor arthritis.
• Fever: Lowers elevated body temperature in acute febrile states.
• Menstrual cramps: Relieves dysmenorrhoeic pain during menstruation.

• Ibuprofen inhibits cyclo‑oxygenase (COX‑1 and COX‑2) enzymes, decreasing the synthesis of prostaglandins that mediate inflammation, pain and fever. This reduction in prostaglandin levels leads to diminished peripheral sensitisation of nociceptors and a lowered hypothalamic set‑point for temperature regulation.

Adverse reactions to ibuprofen may range from mild to severe and should be monitored during therapy.

Common Side Effects

• Gastrointestinal discomfort: nausea, dyspepsia or heartburn.
• Headache: mild, transient headache.
• Dizziness: occasional light‑headed feeling.
• Rash: mild skin irritation or erythema.
• Elevated blood pressure: modest rise in systolic/diastolic values.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Gastrointestinal bleeding: ulceration or hemorrhage in the stomach or intestines.
• Renal impairment: acute kidney injury, especially with dehydration.
• Hepatic injury: elevated liver enzymes or hepatitis.
• Severe hypersensitivity: anaphylaxis, angio‑edema or Stevens‑Johnson syndrome.
• Cardiovascular events: increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

When using Nurofen Rapid, certain safety considerations are important to minimise risk.

• Assess renal function: patients with chronic kidney disease should be evaluated before use.
• Monitor gastrointestinal health: individuals with a history of ulcers or bleeding require caution.
• Evaluate cardiovascular risk: use prudently in patients with hypertension or heart disease.
• Avoid use in late pregnancy: ibuprofen is contraindicated during the third trimester.
• Check for drug interactions: review concomitant medications for potential conflicts.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep below 25°C, retain in original packaging and protect from moisture.

Ibuprofen may interact with several medication classes, requiring attention to avoid reduced efficacy or increased toxicity.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin): heightened risk of serious bleeding.
• High‑dose aspirin aspirin: increased gastrointestinal toxicity.
• Selective COX‑2 inhibitors (e.g., celecoxib): additive renal and cardiovascular effects.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• ACE inhibitors, ARBs: possible reduction in antihypertensive effect and renal function.
• Diuretics (loop or thiazide): enhanced risk of kidney injury.
• Lithium: ibuprofen may raise serum lithium levels.
• Methotrexate: decreased clearance leading to toxicity.
