Nystaderm (Nystatin)

Nystatin is an antifungal agent that acts on yeast and Candida species affecting the skin and mucous membranes.

• Cutaneous candidiasis: Reduces fungal growth and alleviates itching and redness.
• Oral thrush: Controls Candida overgrowth in the mouth, helping to restore normal oral flora.
• Diaper rash (Candida‑associated): Provides relief from inflammation and prevents spread of infection.
• Intertriginous candidiasis: Treats fungal infection in skin folds, reducing irritation and maceration.
• Vaginal candidiasis: Helps to clear yeast infection and associated discharge.
• Esophageal candidiasis: Used as part of a treatment regimen to control fungal proliferation in the esophagus.

• Nystatin binds to ergosterol, a key sterol component of fungal cell membranes, forming pores that increase membrane permeability. This disruption leads to leakage of intracellular electrolytes and macromolecules, ultimately causing fungal cell death without significant effects on human cells that lack ergosterol.

Nystatin may cause local reactions at the site of application.

Common Side Effects

• Mild burning sensation: Temporary discomfort at the application site.
• Itching: Localized pruritus that usually resolves with continued use.
• Redness: Slight erythema of the skin or mucosa.
• Dryness: Mild drying of the treated area.
• Swelling: Minor edema around the application site.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Allergic reaction: Hives, rash, or swelling indicating hypersensitivity.
• Severe skin irritation: Intense burning or ulceration requiring medical attention.
• Systemic absorption effects: Rare systemic toxicity if large areas are treated.
• Anaphylaxis: Life‑threatening allergic response, though extremely uncommon.
• Contact dermatitis: Persistent dermatitis from formulation components.

Before using Nystaderm, consider the following safety measures:

• Assess suitability: Confirm that the infection is caused by susceptible Candida species.
• Monitor for allergy: Discontinue if signs of hypersensitivity appear.
• Limit area: Apply only to affected skin, avoiding extensive body surface coverage.
• Pediatric use: Use under medical supervision in children.
• Pregnancy & lactation: Consult healthcare provider before use.
• Store at below 25°C: Keep in the original packaging, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Nystatin has limited interaction potential.
