Indications & Clinical Uses

Nystan (Ready‑Mixed) is an antifungal agent that acts on yeast‑type fungi causing mucocutaneous infections.

  • Oral candidiasis: reduces fungal colonisation and alleviates symptoms in the mouth and throat.
  • Oropharyngeal thrush: clears Candida plaques and prevents recurrence in immunocompromised patients.
  • Esophageal candidiasis: assists in symptom relief and fungal eradication when administered as a swish‑and‑spit preparation.
  • Dermal candidiasis: treats skin‑fold and intertriginous Candida infections.
  • Vaginal candidiasis: helps restore normal vaginal flora by reducing Candida overgrowth.

How It Works

  • Nystatin binds to sterols, primarily ergosterol, in the fungal cell membrane, creating pores that increase membrane permeability. This leads to leakage of intracellular electrolytes and macromolecules, ultimately causing cell death. The selective affinity for fungal sterols over mammalian cholesterol provides a high degree of topical safety.
