Indications & Clinical Uses

Nystatin is used to treat fungal infections that affect the skin and mucous membranes. It is effective in:

  • Oral thrush: Reduces Candida overgrowth in the mouth, relieving soreness and white plaques.
  • Esophageal candidiasis: Controls fungal growth in the esophagus, improving swallowing and reducing pain.
  • Cutaneous candidiasis: Treats skin infections caused by Candida, easing redness, itching and irritation.
  • Diaper rash: Alleviates fungal‑related diaper dermatitis in infants.
  • Vaginal candidiasis: Helps clear yeast infection symptoms such as itching, discharge and irritation.

How It Works

  • Nystatin binds to ergosterol, a key component of fungal cell membranes, creating pores that increase membrane permeability. This leads to leakage of intracellular electrolytes and macromolecules, ultimately causing fungal cell death without affecting human cells that lack ergosterol.
