Indications & Clinical Uses

Octilia, an ocular decongestant, is used to manage conditions that cause superficial eye redness.

  • Allergic conjunctivitis: reduces redness and mild irritation associated with seasonal allergies.
  • Viral conjunctivitis: provides temporary relief of redness while the infection runs its course.
  • Contact lens‑related irritation: diminishes redness caused by minor mechanical irritation from lens wear.

How It Works

  • Tetryzoline hydrochloride acts as an alpha‑adrenergic agonist on the smooth‑muscle cells of conjunctival blood vessels. Stimulation of alpha‑1 receptors causes vasoconstriction, which decreases blood flow to the ocular surface and rapidly reduces visible hyperemia without directly affecting the underlying cause of inflammation.

Side Effects

Adverse reactions to Octilia are generally mild and reversible.

Common Side Effects

  • Burning or stinging sensation upon instillation.
  • Transient ocular dryness.
  • Mild headache.
  • Temporary blurred vision.
  • Mild eye irritation or itching.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Persistent ocular hypertension.
  • Severe allergic reaction (angio‑edema, anaphylaxis).
  • Corneal ulceration with prolonged use.
  • Vision loss due to ischemic injury.
  • Secondary infection from compromised ocular surface.

Precautions & Warnings

Octilia should be used according to prescriber guidance, with attention to specific safety considerations.

  • Contraindication: Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to tetryzoline or any formulation component.
  • Duration: Limit use to no longer than 48‑48 hours to avoid rebound hyperemia.
  • Contact lens wear: Remove lenses before application and wait before reinserting.
  • Pediatric use: Use only under medical supervision in children under 12 years.
  • Pregnancy & lactation: Use only if clearly needed; discuss risks with a healthcare professional.
  • Store at ambient temperature: keep in original container, protect from light and moisture.

Avoid Interactions

Tetryzoline may interact with other ophthalmic agents, altering efficacy or safety.

Major Interactions (Avoid)
