  • Central diabetes insipidus: reduces excessive urine output and thirst.
  • Nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) in children: decreases nighttime urine production.
  • Mild hemophilia A and von Willebrand disease: raises plasma levels of factor VIII and von Willebrand factor to improve clotting.

How It Works

  • Desmopressin acetate binds selectively to V2 receptors in the renal collecting ducts, stimulating the insertion of aquaporin‑2 water channels and promoting water reabsorption. The same V2‑receptor activation on endothelial cells triggers release of stored von Willebrand factor and factor VIII, enhancing primary haemostasis.

Side Effects

Desmopressin is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

  • Headache: mild to moderate intensity.
  • Nasal congestion: sensation of a blocked nose.
  • Nausea: occasional upset stomach.
  • Hyponatraemia: low sodium levels, usually mild.
  • Flushing: transient reddening of the skin.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Seizure: possible with severe hyponatraemia.
  • Thromboembolic events: rare clot formation.
  • Severe hyponatraemia: may cause cerebral oedema.

  • Assess patient fluid intake: monitor for excessive consumption that could lead to hyponatraemia.
  • Review renal function: impaired kidneys increase risk of water retention.
  • Evaluate bleeding risk: use cautiously in patients with a history of thrombosis.
  • Avoid concomitant use with other antidiuretic agents: may amplify water‑retention effects.
  • Store at room temperature: keep in the original container.
  • Store below 25°C: keep in the original pack, protect
