Indications & Clinical Uses

Octostim is a synthetic vasopressin analog that acts on the antidiuretic hormone pathway to reduce urine output and enhance coagulation factor release.

  • Central Diabetes Insipidus: Helps reduce excessive thirst and urine volume.
  • Nocturnal Enuresis: Decreases nighttime bladder emptying in children and adolescents.
  • Mild Hemophilia A and von Willebrand Disease: Raises plasma levels of factor VIII and von Willebrand factor to improve clotting.
  • Pre‑surgical Surgical Preparation: Used to control bleeding before minor procedures.
  • Management of Hyponatremia Risk: Allows careful water balance management.
  • Support for renal concentrating ability in certain renal disorders of the kidney .

How It Works

  • Desmopressin acetate binds selectively to V2 receptors in the renal collecting ducts and endothelial cells, stimulating cyclic AMP production. This promotes insertion of aquaporin‑2 water channels into the apical membrane, enhancing water reabsorption, and triggers the release of stored factor VIII and von Willebrand factor from endothelial storage sites, improving haemostatic function.
