Octostim (Desmopressin Acetate)

Octostim is an antidiuretic hormone analog that acts on the body’s water‑regulation pathways. It is indicated for several well‑established clinical situations:

• Central diabetes insipidus: helps to reduce excessive urine output and normalize plasma sodium levels.
• Nocturnal enuresis: decreases nighttime bladder pressure and frequency of wet‑wetting episodes.
• Mild hemophilia A or von von Willebrand disease: raises plasma levels of factor VIII and von Willebrand factor to improve clotting.
• Primary urinary tract bleeding: supports hemostasis in patients with mild mucosal bleeding.

• Desmopressin acetate is a synthetic analogue of the natural hormone arginine‑vasopressin. It binds selectively to V2 receptors on renal collecting‑duct cells, stimulating cyclic AMP production and promoting insertion of aquaporin‑2 water channels into the apical membrane, which enhances water reabsorption. The same V2‑receptor activation in endothelial cells increases the release of factor VIII and von Willebrand factor, improving haemostatic function.

Desmopressin acetate may cause a range of adverse reactions, from mild to potentially serious.

Common Side Effects

• Headache: mild to moderate intensity.
• Nasal irritation or dryness: especially with intranasal administration.
