Indications & Clinical Uses

Octreoscan is a radiolabeled somatostatin analogue used in nuclear medicine to image neuroendocrine tumor pathways.

  • Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors: helps detect and stage the extent of disease.
  • Carcinoid syndrome tumors: assists in localising primary and metastatic lesions.
  • Medullary thyroid carcinoma: aids in identifying somatostatin‑receptor positive lesions.
  • Small‑cell lung cancer: supports visualisation of somatostatin‑expressing lesions.
  • Neuroendocrine metastases: evaluates distribution of metastatic disease.

How It Works

  • Indium In-111 pentetreotide binds with high affinity to somatostatin receptor subtypes (mainly SSTR2) that are over‑expressed on many neuroendocrine tumour cells. After intravenous injection, the radiolabelled peptide localises to receptor‑rich tissues, allowing gamma‑camera imaging of tumour distribution and receptor density.
