Indications & Clinical Uses

Octreotide Hospira is a synthetic somatostatin analogue that modulates neuroendocrine activity in several disease pathways.

  • Acromegaly: helps reduce excess growth‑hormone secretion, improving clinical signs.
  • Neuroendocrine tumors (carcinoid syndrome): controls flushing and diarrhoea by inhibiting vasoactive peptide release.
  • Preventing postoperative pancreatic fistula: reduces pancreatic secretions after major abdominal surgery.
  • Control of severe refractory diarrhoea associated with vaso‑vascular tumors.
  • Management of hypoglycaemia related to insulinoma or beta‑cell hyper‑activity.
  • Symptom relief in carcinoid‑related bronchial obstruction of the air ways

How It Works

  • Octreotide binds selectively to somatostatin receptors (mainly subtypes sst‑2 and sst‑3) on endocrine and neuroendocrine cells, inhibiting cyclic AMP formation and calcium‑mediated secretion. This receptor activation suppresses the release of growth hormone, insulin, glucagon, gastrin and various vasoactive peptides, thereby modulating hormonal and secretory activity associated with the indicated conditions.
