Indications & Clinical Uses

Olidermil is a topical skin protectant that acts on the outermost layer of the skin to reduce moisture loss and shield against irritants.

  • Diaper rash: Provides a soothing barrier that helps prevent and treat mild irritation caused by prolonged contact with moisture.
  • Minor burns: Forms a protective layer that supports natural healing and reduces exposure to air and contaminants.
  • Contact dermatitis: Creates a barrier that lessens contact with allergens and irritants, aiding symptom relief.
  • Post‑procedural skin care: Helps protect skin around minor surgical sites or after dermatological procedures.
  • Dry skin: Offers a moisturizing barrier that reduces transepidermal water loss.

How It Works

  • Zinc oxide works as an inert, physical sunscreen and barrier agent. When applied to the skin, it remains on the surface, reflecting and scattering ultraviolet radiation and creating a protective film that limits water loss and blocks irritants from penetrating the epidermis. Its low solubility prevents systemic absorption, allowing it to act locally without interacting with cellular receptors.

Side Effects

Zinc oxide is generally well tolerated, but local skin reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

  • Mild erythema: Slight redness at the application site.
  • Pruritus: Itching without signs of infection.
  • Dryness: Temporary feeling of tightness or dry skin.
  • Scaling: Minor flaking of the skin surface.
  • Sensation of tingling: Brief, mild tingling after application.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Contact dermatitis: Allergic reaction presenting with intense redness, swelling, or blistering.
  • Severe irritation: Persistent burning or stinging that does not improve.
  • Secondary infection: Development of bacterial or fungal infection at the site.
  • Systemic toxicity: Extremely rare, associated with extensive application over large body surface areas.
  • Hypersensitivity reaction: Generalized rash, urticaria, or angio‑angio‑e
