Indications & Clinical Uses

Olmesartan Medoxomil is an antihypertensive agent that acts on the renin‑angiotensin system to lower blood pressure.

  • Hypertension: helps achieve target blood pressure and reduces cardiovascular risk.
  • Diabetic nephropathy (adjunct): may slow progression of kidney damage when used with other therapies.
  • Heart failure (off‑label): sometimes used to support blood‑pressure control in heart‑failure patients.
  • Stroke prevention (off‑label): contributes to long‑term risk reduction in patients with prior cerebrovascular events.

How It Works

  • Olmesartan Medoxomil is a selective antagonist of the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor. By blocking AT1 receptors, it prevents angiotensin II‑mediated vasoconstriction, aldosterone secretion, and sympathetic activation, leading to vasodilation, reduced sodium and water retention, and ultimately lower systemic blood pressure.
