Indications & Clinical Uses

Olmesartan Medoxil is an ARB that lowers blood pressure by blocking the renin‑angiotensin system.

  • Hypertension: helps achieve target blood pressure and reduces cardiovascular risk.
  • Diabetic nephropathy: slows progression of kidney damage associated with type 2 diabetes.
  • Heart failure: used as part of combination therapy to improve symptoms and outcomes.

How It Works

  • Olmesartan medoxil is a pro‑drug that is rapidly converted to olmesartan, a selective antagonist of the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor. By blocking AT1 receptors, it prevents angiotensin II‑mediated vasoconstriction, aldosterone secretion, and sympathetic activation, leading to vasodilation, reduced sodium‑water retention, and lower systemic blood pressure.
