Olmesartan Medoxomil Aurobindo (Olmesartan Medoxomil)

Olmesartan Medoxomil is an antihypertensive agent that acts on the renin‑angiotensin‑aldosterone system to lower blood pressure.

• Hypertension: helps achieve and maintain target blood pressure levels in adults.
• Diastolic heart failure: may be used as part of combination therapy to improve cardiac function.
• Chronic kidney disease with proteinuria: contributes to slowing progression of renal impairment when used with other antihypertensives.

• Olmesartan medoxil is a pro‑drug that is rapidly converted to olmesartan, which selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptors on vascular smooth‑muscle and adrenal cells. This inhibition prevents vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion, leading to reduced peripheral resistance and the overall lowering of arterial blood pressure.

Olmesartan Medoxomil is generally well‑tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

• Dizziness
• Headache
• Fatigue
• Nasal congestion
• Diarrhoea

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Angio‑edema
• Hyperkalemia
• Acute kidney injury
• Severe hypotension
• Liver enzyme elevation (transaminase rise)

Olmesartan Medoxomil should be used cautiously.

• Renal function:  Assess  baseline  and  periodically  especially  in  patients  with  renal  impairment.
• Electrolyte balance:  Check  serum  potassium  levels  periodically.
• Pregnancy  :  Avoid  use  during  the  second  and  third  trimesters  due  to  potential  fetal  harm.
• Breast  :  Caution  if  maternal  exposure  may  affect  infants  through  breeding  milk.
