Olopatadin Unimed Pharma (Olopatadine)

Olopatadine is an antihistamine that acts on ocular allergic pathways to relieve symptoms of eye allergy.

• Allergic conjunctivitis: reduces redness, itching and watery discharge.
• Seasonal allergic eye disease: alleviates itching and photophobia.
• Vernal keratoconjunctivitis: helps control chronic inflammation and itching.
• Contact lens‑related allergy: minimizes discomfort and redness.
• Post‑operative ocular inflammation: supports reduction of allergic‑type symptoms after eye surgery.

• Olopatadine selectively blocks histamine H1 receptors on mast cells and conjunctival tissues, preventing histamine‑mediated vasodilation and itching. It also stabilises mast cells, reducing the release of inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes and prostaglandins, which contributes to its antiallergic effect in the eye.

Olopatadine may cause ocular and systemic adverse reactions.

Common Side Effects

• Burning sensation: mild transient burning upon instillation.
• Stinging: brief stinging feeling after drop application.
• Redness: mild conjunctival hyperemia.
• Blurred vision: temporary visual disturbance.
• Dry eye: mild decrease in tear film stability.
• Foreign‑body sensation: feeling of grit or sand.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction: angioedema or anaphylaxis.
• Persistent ocular irritation: prolonged discomfort requiring medical review.
• Corneal ulceration: rare but serious corneal damage.
• Vision loss: extremely rare, may indicate serious ocular pathology.
• Elevated intra‑ocular pressure: possible increase in glaucoma risk.
• Contact dermatitis: skin reaction around the eye.

Olopatadine should be used with caution in patients with known sensitivities.

• Assess allergy history: confirm no prior hypersensitivity to olopatadine or similar antihistamines.
• Monitor pediatric use: adjust observation for children under 3 years.
• Evaluate ocular surface disease: avoid use if active infection is present.
• Review concomitant eye medications: assess for potential additive irritation.
• Counsel on proper technique: instruct patients to avoid touching the tip to the eye or surrounding skin.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep in original container, protect from light and moisture.
