Olopatadine is an antihistamine that acts on ocular allergic reactions.

• Allergic conjunctivitis: reduces redness, itching and swelling of the eyes.
• Seasonal allergic eye disease: alleviates symptoms caused by pollen and other seasonal allergens.
• Vernal keratoconjunctivitis: helps control inflammation and discomfort in this chronic condition.
• Contact lens‑related irritation: eases itching and redness associated with contact lens wear.
• Post‑operative eye inflammation: supports reduction of inflammation after ocular surgery.

• Olopatadine blocks histamine H1 receptors on mast cells and conjunctival cells, preventing the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators. It also exhibits mast‑cell stabilising activity, reducing the cascade of allergic inflammation in the ocular surface tissues.

Olopatadine may cause a range of ocular and systemic reactions.

Common Side Effects

• Burning or stinging sensation in the eye.
• Transient blurred vision.
• Mild eye irritation or foreign‑body sensation.
• Redness of the conjunctiva.
• Tearing or watery eyes.
• Headache.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) with swelling of the face or throat.
• Persistent eye pain or significant vision loss.
• Corneal ulceration or keratitis.
• Elevated intra‑ocular pressure.
• Sudden onset of severe headache with visual disturbances.
• Development of ocular infections not previously present.

• Avoid contact with contact lenses: remove lenses before application and wait before reinserting.
• Monitor for hypersensitivity: discontinue if signs of allergic reaction appear.
• Caution in patients with glaucoma: assess intra‑ocular pressure regularly.
• Use with care in patients with a history of ocular surgery.
• Do not use in eyes with active infection unless directed by a clinician.
