Indications & Clinical Uses

Glimepiride is used to manage blood glucose in the context of type 2 diabetes mellitus, targeting insulin secretion pathways.

  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Improves glycaemic control by stimulating pancreatic beta‑cell insulin release.
  • Adjunct to Diet and Exercise: Enhances the glucose‑lowering effect of lifestyle measures.
  • Combination Therapy: Can be combined with metformin or other oral antidiabetics when monotherapy does not achieve target HbA1c.

How It Works

  • Glimepiride binds to the sulfonylurea receptor subunit of the ATP‑sensitive potassium (K‑ATP) channel on pancreatic beta‑cells, causing channel closure, membrane depolarisation, calcium influx and subsequent insulin secretion independent of glucose levels.

Side Effects

Glimepiride may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are dose‑related and reversible.
