Omestad (Omeprazole)

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that acts on the gastric acid secretion pathway. It is indicated for several acid‑related gastrointestinal conditions:

• Gastro‑oesophageal reflux disease (GERD): alleviates heartburn and promotes healing of erosive esophagitis.
• Peptic ulcer disease: supports ulcer healing and reduces recurrence risk.
• Zollinger‑Ellison syndrome: controls excessive gastric acid production.
• Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens: used as adjunct adjunctive therapy to improve eradication rates.
• NSAID‑induced ulcer prophylaxis: lowers risk of ulcer development in at‑risk patients.

• Omeprazole selectively and irreversibly inhibits the H+/K+‑ATPase enzyme (the gastric proton pump) located on the secretory surface of parietal cells. By blocking this final step of acid secretion, it markedly reduces both basal and stimulated gastric acidity, allowing the mucosal lining to recover and decreasing irritation from gastric acid.

Omeprazole is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

• Headache: mild to moderate intensity.
• Diarrhea: usually self‑limiting.
• Abdominal pain: intermittent discomfort.
• Nausea: occasional queasiness.
• Flatulence: increased intestinal gas.
• Constipation: occasional bowel habit change.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Clostridioides difficile infection: severe colitis risk.
• Acute interstitial nephritis: renal inflammation.
• Hypomagnesemia: low serum magnesium levels.
• Stevens‑Johnson syndrome: severe skin reactions.
• Fracture risk: possible reduction in bone mineral density.
• Liver enzyme elevation: increased ALT/AST.

When prescribing Omeprazole, clinicians should consider several safety aspects.

• Assess patient history for hepatic impairment: dose adjustment may be required.
• Evaluate risk of osteoporosis or fracture: long‑term use warrants monitoring.
• Monitor electrolyte levels, especially magnesium: supplementation may be needed.
• Review concomitant medications for potential interactions: especially drugs requiring gastric acidity.
• Store at below 25°C: keep in the original pack, protect from moisture.

Omeprazole may interact with several medicines, altering their absorption or metabolism.
