Omniscan (Gadodiamide)

Omniscan is used as an MRI contrast agent to improve visualization of anatomical structures and pathological conditions.

• Gadodiamide is a gadolinium‑based contrast agent that distributes in the extracellular fluid after intravenous injection. Its paramagnetic properties shorten T1 relaxation times of nearby water protons, producing increased signal intensity on T1‑weighted MRI sequences and thereby enhancing the contrast between normal and abnormal tissues.

Adverse reactions to gadodiamide‑based contrast agents vary in frequency and severity.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea: mild, transient discomfort.
• Headache: brief, self‑limiting.
• Injection site discomfort: mild pain or burning at the infusion site.
• Warmth sensation: fleeting feeling of heat during administration.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF): fibrotic skin changes in patients with severe renal impairment.
• Anaphylactoid reactions: hives, bronchospasm, hypotension.
• Severe allergic reactions: angio‑edema, respiratory distress.
• Cardiac arrest: extremely rare, may occur with severe anaphylaxis.

When using Omniscan, clinicians should assess patient history and monitor for adverse events.

• Renal function assessment: evaluate glomerular filtration rate before administration.
• Pregnancy caution: avoid use unless clearly needed, as safety data are limited.
