Omniscan (Gadodiamide)

Omniscan is used in magnetic resonance imaging procedures that require contrast enhancement to assess vascular and tissue abnormalities.

• Whole‑body screening: Provides contrast for comprehensive assessment of multiple organ systems.

• Gadodiamide is a low‑molecular‑weight gadolinium chelate that distributes in the extracellular fluid after intravenous injection. It shortens the T1 relaxation time of nearby water protons, increasing signal intensity on T1‑weighted MRI sequences and thereby highlighting vascular structures and areas with disrupted blood‑brain or tissue barriers.

Adverse reactions to gadodiamide‑based contrast agents are generally infrequent but can occur.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea: Mild, transient feeling of stomach upset.
• Headache: Usually short‑lived and resolves without treatment.
• Injection site discomfort: Mild pain or burning sensation at the infusion site.
• Warmth or flushing: Temporary sensation of warmth spreading through the body.
• Dizziness: Light‑headed feeling that typically subsides quickly.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF): Fibrotic skin changes

• Allergic reaction: Hives, rash, or anaphylaxis requiring immediate medical attention.
• Severe renal impairment: Worsening kidney function in susceptible patients.
• Cardiac arrest: Extremely rare, may occur with severe hypersensitivity.

Omniscan should be administered only under conditions where patient monitoring is possible.

• Assess renal function: Check serum creatinine or eGFR before administration.
• Review allergy history: Identify prior reactions to contrast media.
• Hydration: Encourage adequate fluid intake before and after the procedure.
• Use lowest effective dose: Tailor volume to imaging requirements.
• Pregnancy and lactation: Use only if clearly needed; weigh benefits against potential risks.
• Store at ambient temperature: Keep in original packaging, protect from light and moisture.
