Ondansetron Accord Healthcare Ireland (Ondansetron)

Ondansetron is a selective 5‑HT3 receptor antagonist used to manage nausea and vomiting in several clinical settings.

• Chemotherapy‑induced nausea and vomiting: helps prevent and control acute and delayed episodes.
• Radiotherapy‑induced nausea and vomiting: reduces the frequency and severity of symptoms.
• Post‑operative nausea and vomiting: decreases the incidence of nausea after surgical procedures.

• Ondansetron blocks the serotonin 5‑HT3 receptors located in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract, inhibiting the transmission of emetic signals to the brain’s vomiting centre. This antagonism reduces the stimulation of the chemoreceptor trigger zone and prevents nausea and vomiting triggered by chemotherapy, radiation, or surgical stress.

Ondansetron is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

• Headache: mild to moderate headache may occur.
• Constipation: reduced bowel movements are reported.
• Diarrhoea: occasional loose stools.
• Fatigue: feeling of tiredness or low energy.
• Dizziness: light‑headed sensation.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Cardiac arrhythmia: irregular heart rhythm, including QT prolongation.
• Severe allergic reaction: rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
