Indications & Clinical Uses

Ondansetron B. Braun is a selective 5‑HT3 receptor antagonist that reduces nausea and vomiting triggered by several clinical pathways.

  • Chemotherapy‑induced nausea and vomiting: helps control the acute and delayed phases of CINV.
  • Radiation‑induced nausea and vomiting: reduces the incidence of nausea and vomiting during and after radiation therapy.
  • Post‑operative nausea and vomiting: decreases the frequency of postoperative PONV in patients undergoing surgery.
  • Pregnancy‑related vomiting: may be considered for severe hyper‑emesis gravidarum when other measures have failed — but only under strict medical supervision.

How It Works

  • Ondansetron selectively blocks the serotonin 5‑HT3 receptors located in the chemoreceptor trigger zone, vagal afferents of the gastrointestinal tract, and the central nervous system. By inhibiting these receptors, it prevents serotonin‑mediated stimulation of the vomiting centre, thereby reducing the initiation of nausea and vomiting signals triggered by chemotherapy, radiation, or surgical stress.

Side Effects

Ondansetron is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

  • Headache: mild to moderate intensity.
  • Constipation: occasional bowel movement changes.
  • Diarrhoea: transient loose stools.
  • Fatigue: feeling of tiredness or reduced energy.
  • Dizziness: light‑headed sensation.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Cardiac arrhythmia: QT‑interval prolongation, especially with high intravenous doses.
  • Severe allergic reaction: rash, itching, swelling, or anaphylaxis.
  • Serotonin syndrome: rare when combined with other serotonergic agents.
  • Hepatic dysfunction: elevated liver enzymes.
  • Vision changes: blurred vision or visual disturbances.

Precautions & Warnings

When using Ondansetron B. Braun, clinicians should consider several safety measures.

  • Cardiac monitoring: assess baseline ECG in patients with known cardiac risk.
  • Electrolyte balance: correct hypokalaemia or hypomagnesemia before infusion.
  • Concomitant serotonergic drugs: avoid or monitor for serotonin syndrome.
  • Pregnancy and lactation: evaluate risk‑benefit ratio; use only if clearly needed.
  • Pediatric dosing: adjust dose according to weight and age guidelines.
  • Store at ambient temperature: keep in original packaging, protect from light and moisture.

Avoid Interactions

Ondansetron may interact with several medication classes.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

  • QT‑prolonging drugs: concurrent use with other agents that lengthen the QT interval can increase arrhythmia risk.
  • Apomorphine: may cause profound hypotension and loss of consciousness.
