Indications & Clinical Uses

Ondansetron Kabi is a selective 5‑HT3 receptor antagonist used in the management of nausea and vomiting pathways associated with several clinical settings.

  • Chemotherapy‑induced nausea and vomiting: Reduces the frequency and severity of acute and delayed episodes.
  • Radiotherapy‑induced nausea and vomiting: Helps control nausea during and after radiation treatment.
  • Post‑operative nausea and vomiting: Decreases incidence of nausea and vomiting after surgical procedures.
  • Pregnancy‑related hyperemesis gravidarum: Provides symptomatic relief when other measures are insufficient.
  • Anticipatory nausea: Lessens nausea that occurs before chemotherapy in patients with prior experience.

How It Works

  • Ondansetron blocks the action of serotonin at the 5‑HT3 receptors located on vagal nerve terminals in the gastrointestinal tract and in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the brain. By preventing receptor activation, it interrupts the signaling cascade that initiates the vomiting reflex, thereby reducing nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapeutic agents, radiation, and surgical stress.
