Ondansetron Normon (Ondansetron)

Ondansetron Normon is a selective 5‑HT3 receptor antagonist used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting in several clinical settings.

• Chemotherapy‑induced nausea and vomiting: helps control acute and delayed episodes in cancer patients.
• Radiotherapy‑induced nausea and vomiting: reduces the frequency and severity of symptoms during and after treatment.
• Post‑operative nausea and vomiting: decreases incidence of nausea and vomiting after surgical procedures.
• Pregnancy‑related hyperemesis gravidarum (off‑label): may be considered when conventional therapy fails, under specialist supervision.
• Anticipatory nausea: used in patients who develop nausea in anticipation of chemotherapy sessions.

• Ondansetron selectively blocks serotonin (5‑HT3) receptors located on vagal afferent nerves in the gastrointestinal tract and in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the brain. By inhibiting these receptors, it prevents serotonin‑mediated signaling that triggers the vomiting reflex, thereby reducing nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery.

Side effects of Ondansetron Normon are generally mild but can vary in severity.

Common Side Effects

• Headache: mild to moderate intensity.
• Constipation: reduced bowel movements.
• Diarrhoea: loose stools.
• Fatigue: feeling of tiredness.
• Dizziness: light‑headed sensation.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• QT interval prolongation: cardiac rhythm changes detectable on ECG.
• Severe allergic reaction: rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
• Serotonin syndrome: agitation, hyperreflexia, tremor, especially if combined with other serotonergic agents.
• Hepatic dysfunction: elevated liver enzymes.
• Vision changes: blurred vision or visual disturbances.

When using Ondansetron Normon, several precautions should be considered to ensure safe administration.

• Cardiac monitoring: patients with known prolonged QT interval or electrolyte abnormalities should be monitored.
• Electrolyte balance: correct hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, or hypocalcaemia before initiating therapy.
• Concomitant serotonergic drugs: avoid or use with caution.
• Pregnancy and lactation: assess risk‑benefit ratio; use only if clearly needed.
• Renal or hepatic impairment: dose adjustment may be required.
• Store at below 25°C: keep in the original packaging.
