Indications & Clinical Uses

Ondansetron is used to manage nausea and vomiting by acting on the serotonergic pathways involved in the emetic response.

  • Chemotherapy‑induced nausea and vomiting: reduces the frequency and severity of episodes in cancer patients.
  • Radiation‑induced nausea and vomiting: helps control symptoms during and after radiotherapy.
  • Post‑operative nausea and vomiting: prevents nausea and vomiting after surgical procedures.
  • Hyperemesis gravidarum: used off‑label in some regions to control severe pregnancy‑related nausea when other treatments fail.

How It Works

  • Ondansetron selectively blocks serotonin (5‑HT3) receptors located in the chemoreceptor trigger zone, vagal nerve terminals, and the gastrointestinal tract. By inhibiting these receptors, it prevents serotonin‑mediated activation of the vomiting centre in the brainstem, thereby reducing the sensation of nausea and the reflex of vomiting.
