Indications & Clinical Uses

Ondansetron is a selective serotonin 5‑HT3 receptor antagonist used in the management of nausea and vomiting pathways.

  • Chemotherapy‑induced nausea and vomiting: Reduces the frequency and severity of acute and delayed episodes.
  • Radiation‑induced nausea and vomiting: Helps control nausea during and after radiotherapy.
  • Post‑operative nausea and vomiting: Decreases the incidence of nausea and vomiting after surgical procedures.

How It Works

  • Ondansetron blocks the action of serotonin at 5‑HT3 receptors located in the chemoreceptor trigger zone and gastrointestinal tract, preventing the initiation of the vomiting reflex. This selective antagonism reduces the transmission of nausea signals to the brain's vomiting centre.
