Indications & Clinical Uses

Ondansetron acts on the serotonergic pathway to control nausea and vomiting. It is indicated for:

  • Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV): helps reduce the frequency and severity of nausea and vomiting caused by cytotoxic drugs.
  • Radiation-induced nausea and vomiting (RINV): provides relief from nausea and vomiting that occur during or after radiotherapy.
  • Post‑operative nausea and vomiting (PONV): reduces the incidence of nausea and vomiting following surgical procedures.

How It Works

  • Ondansetron selectively blocks the 5‑hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5‑HT3) receptors located in the chemoreceptor trigger zone, vagal afferents, and the gastrointestinal tract. By inhibiting these receptors, it prevents serotonin‑mediated activation of the vomiting centre in the brainstem, thereby reducing nausea and vomiting signals.
