Opexa (Bilastine)

Bilastine is an antihistamine that works on the histamine H1‑receptor pathway to relieve allergy‑related symptoms.

• Allergic rhinitis: reduces sneezing, nasal itching and runny nose.
• Chronic spontaneous urticaria: decreases the number and size of hives and associated itching.
• Seasonal allergy symptoms: provides relief from pollen‑induced nasal and ocular discomfort.

• Bilastine selectively blocks peripheral H1‑histamine receptors, preventing histamine‑induced vasodilation, increased vascular permeability and sensory nerve activation. This antagonism reduces the early‑phase allergic response without significant central nervous system penetration.

Bilastine is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

• Headache: mild to moderate intensity.
• Dry mouth: transient sensation of oral dryness.
• Drowsiness: occasional mild sedation.
• Fatigue: feeling of reduced energy.
• Nausea: mild gastrointestinal upset.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Anaphylaxis: acute, potentially life‑threatening allergic reaction.
• Stevens‑Johnson syndrome: severe skin and mucous membrane disorder.
• Hepatotoxicity: abnormal liver enzyme elevations.
• Cardiac arrhythmia: irregular heart rhythm reported in rare cases.

When using Bilastine, consider the following safety measures:

• Pregnancy: limited data; use only if clearly needed.
• Breastfeeding: excreted in milk; weigh benefits against risks.
• Renal impairment: dose adjustment may be required.
• Concomitant alcohol or CNS depressants: may increase drowsiness.
• Age: safety not established in children under 12 years.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep in original packaging, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
