Ophtacalm (Sodium Cromoglicate)

Ophtacalm is a mast cell stabilizer that acts on allergic and inflammatory pathways of the eye.

• Allergic conjunctivitis: reduces ocular itching, redness and tearing.
• Vernal keratoconjunctivitis: helps control chronic inflammation and photophobia.
• Seasonal allergic eye disease: alleviates symptoms during pollen seasons.
• Post‑surgical ocular inflammation: supports reduction of inflammation after eye surgery.

• Sodium cromoglicate stabilises mast cells by inhibiting the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators from activated cells. This action reduces the cascade of allergic inflammation in ocular tissues, limiting vasodilation, vascular permeability and sensory nerve activation that cause itching and redness.

Adverse reactions to Ophtacalm are generally mild and related to local ocular tolerance.

Common Side Effects

• Temporary stinging or burning sensation on instillation.
• Mild eye irritation or foreign‑body sensation.
• Transient blurred vision.
• Mild conjunctival hyperemia.
• Slight increase in tear production.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Persistent ocular irritation or pain.
• Significant visual acuity changes.
• Allergic contact dermatitis of the eyelid skin.
• Severe hypersensitivity reaction (e.g., angio‑edema).
• Secondary ocular infection.
• Development of corneal ulceration.

When using Ophtacalm, follow these safety considerations:

• Avoid contact with contact lenses: remove lenses before instillation and wait before reinserting.
• Monitor for allergic reactions: discontinue if severe irritation or rash develops.
• Use with caution in patients with pre‑existing ocular surface disease.
• Do not exceed recommended frequency: follow prescriber instructions.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep in the original container, protect from direct sunlight and moisture.

Ophtacalm may interact with other ophthalmic preparations; awareness of potential combinations is important.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Concurrent use with topical corticosteroids: may mask signs of infection.
