Indications & Clinical Uses

Ophtha-Cur combines two agents that act on ocular pressure regulation pathways to treat elevated intra‑ocular pressure.

  • Primary open‑angle glaucoma: reduces intra‑ocular pressure and slows visual field loss.
  • Ocular hypertension: lowers eye pressure to prevent progression to glaucoma.
  • Secondary glaucoma (e.g., pseudoexfoliative): assists in pressure control when monotherapy is insufficient.

How It Works

  • Timolol maleate blocks beta‑adrenergic receptors in the ciliary body, decreasing aqueous humor production, while latanoprost, a prostaglandin F2α analogue, increases uveal outflow by remodeling the extracellular matrix of the trabecular meshwork. The combined actions result in a net reduction of intra‑ocular pressure.

Side Effects

Adverse reactions may occur with any ophthalmic preparation containing timorol and latanoprost.

Common Side Effects

  • Eye irritation: mild burning or stinging upon instillation.
  • Redness: conjunctival hyperemia.
  • Blurred vision: transient visual disturbance.
  • Dry eye: reduced tear film stability.
  • Eyelash changes: increased length or thickness.
  • Periorbital darkening: mild hyperpigmentation of the skin.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Ocular inflammation: uveitis or iritis.
  • Severe allergic reaction: eyelid edema, swelling, or hives.
  • Persistent headache or chest discomfort.

Precautions & Warnings

When using Ophtha-Cur, patients should be evaluated for cardiovascular and respiratory health, and instructed to follow proper administration technique.

  • Assess cardiovascular status: check for bradycardia, heart block, or asthma.
  • Review ocular history: ensure no active ocular infection or inflammation.
  • Avoid contact lens wear: discontinue lenses before and after instillation.
  • Monitor intra‑ocular pressure: schedule regular eye‑pressure checks.
  • Caution with systemic beta‑blockers: consider additive effects.
  • Store at ambient temperature: keep in original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
