• Absence seizures: reduces the number of brief loss‑of‑consciousness episodes.
• Myoclonic seizures: diminishes the occurrence of sudden muscle jerks.

• Sodium valproate increases brain concentrations of gamma‑aminobutyric acid (GABA) by inhibiting its degradation and enhancing its synthesis, while also modulating voltage‑gated sodium channels and reducing excitatory glutamate transmission, collectively stabilising neuronal firing and preventing seizure propagation.
