Indications & Clinical Uses

Orvasta is a lipid‑lowering agent that acts on the cholesterol synthesis pathway. It is indicated for:

  • Primary hypercholesterolaemia: reduces LDL‑C and total cholesterol levels.
  • Mixed dyslipidaemia: lowers triglycerides and raises HDL‑C modestly.
  • Primary prevention of cardiovascular events: helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke and related vascular events in high‑risk patients.

How It Works

  • Atorvastatin competitively inhibits HMG‑CoA reductase, the key enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of HMG‑CoA to mevalonate, a precursor in hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis. By reducing intracellular cholesterol synthesis, hepatic cells up‑regulate LDL receptors, increasing clearance of circulating LDL particles and lowering plasma cholesterol concentrations.

Side Effects

Adverse reactions to Orvasta vary in frequency and severity.

Common Side Effects

  • Myalgia or muscle aches.
  • Elevated liver enzymes (ALT/AST).
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea or abdominal pain.

Precautions & Warnings
