Indications & Clinical Uses

Osteonorm, a bisphosphonate, is used in disorders that affect bone metabolism:

  • Osteoporosis: helps reduce the incidence of vertebral fractures by inhibiting bone resorption.
  • Paget’s disease of bone: decreases abnormal bone remodeling and associated pain.
  • Hypercalcaemia of malignancy: assists in lowering serum calcium levels.
  • Bone metastasis‑related pain: provides analgesic benefit through reduced osteoclast activity.

How It Works

  • Clodronate disodium is a non‑nitrogenous bisphosphonate that binds to hydroxy‑apatite crystals in bone, where it is taken up by osteoclasts during resorption. Inside the cell it is metabolised to a non‑hydrolyzable ATP analogue that disrupts mitochondrial function, leading to osteoclast apoptosis and reduced bone resorption.
