Otasol (Clotrimazole)

Clotrimazole is an antifungal agent that acts on dermatophyte and yeast infections of the skin.

• Athlete's foot (tinea pedis): reduces itching and clears the fungal infection on the feet.
• Jock itch (tinea cruris): alleviates redness and eliminates the causative fungus in the groin area.
• Ringworm (tinea corporis): promotes healing of circular skin lesions caused by dermatophytes.
• Yeast infection (candidiasis) of the skin: controls overgrowth of Candida species on moist skin surfaces.
• Seborrheic dermatitis: helps reduce flaking and erythema associated with Malassezia yeast.
• Pityriasis versicolor: lightens discolored patches by eradicating the responsible yeast.

• Clotrimazole inhibits the fungal enzyme lanosterol 14α‑demethylase, a key step in ergosterol synthesis. By disrupting ergosterol production, the drug compromises fungal cell membrane integrity, leading to increased permeability and ultimately cell death. This selective action targets fungi while sparing human cells, providing effective topical antifungal therapy.

Clotrimazole is generally well tolerated, but local reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

• Mild burning or stinging at the application site.
• Itching or mild skin irritation.
• Redness or erythema around the treated area.
• Dryness or peeling of the skin.
• Slight swelling or edema at the site of application.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction (angio‑edema, anaphylaxis).
• Contact dermatitis with extensive blistering.
• Persistent worsening of the skin condition despite treatment.
• Unusual skin discoloration.
• Development of secondary bacterial infection at the site.

When using Otasol, consider the following safety measures:

• Pregnancy: Consult a healthcare professional before use; limited data are available.
• Breastfeeding: Use only if the benefit outweighs potential risk to the infant.
• Age restrictions: Not recommended for infants under 2 months without medical advice.
• Application area: Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and broken skin.
• Concomitant skin products: Do not apply other topical medications to the same area unless directed.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep in the original packaging, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Clotrimazole has a low potential for systemic drug interactions because it is applied locally.

• Topical corticosteroids applied to the same site can alter absorption and reduce antifungal efficacy.
