Otipax (Phenazone, Lidocaine Hydrochloride)

Otipax is used in the management of ear discomfort through its anti‑inflammatory and local‑anesthetic actions.

• Acute otitis media: reduces pain and inflammation in the middle ear.
• External ear canal irritation: alleviates burning and itching associated with mild otitis externa.
• Post‑procedural ear pain: provides symptomatic relief after ear examinations or minor procedures.

• Phenazone inhibits cyclo‑oxygenase enzymes, decreasing prostaglandin synthesis and thereby reducing inflammation and pain. Lidocaine hydrochloride stabilises neuronal membranes by blocking voltage‑gated sodium channels, which prevents the initiation and propagation of nerve impulses, producing local anaesthesia in the ear canal.

Adverse reactions may occur following topical application of Otipax.

Common Side Effects

• Mild itching or burning sensation at the application site.
• Temporary ear fullness or a feeling of pressure.
• Minor redness of the external ear canal.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Allergic contact dermatitis with swelling or vesicle formation.
• Persistent otitis media or secondary infection.
• Severe ototoxicity leading to hearing changes.
• Systemic hypersensitivity reactions such as urticaria or anaphylaxis.

When using Otipax, consider the following safety measures:

• Contraindication: Do not use in patients with known allergy to phenazone, lidocaine or any formulation excipients.
• Assessment: Evaluate the presence of ear perforation before application.
• Monitoring: Observe for signs of local irritation or infection.
• Interaction: Avoid simultaneous use of other topical otologic preparations.
• Storage: Store at below 25°C: keep in the original pack and protect from moisture.
