Indications & Clinical Uses

Rifampicin is a broad‑spectrum antibacterial that acts on mycobacterial infections, particularly the tuberculosis complex. It is employed in several clinical contexts:

  • Pulmonary tuberculosis: contributes to bacterial clearance and reduces relapse risk.
  • Extrapulmonary tuberculosis: aids in controlling disease at sites such of dissemination.
  • Leprosy (Hansen disease): part of multidrug therapy to limit bacterial proliferation.
  • Prophylaxis for mening mening of contacts of TB cases : pre‑empt development of active TB infection.
  • Staphyl  st  infection  : used  as  adjacent  therapy  in  certain  resistant  strains  when  combined  with  other  agents.

How It Works

  • Rifampicin binds  to the β‑subunit of bacterial DNA‑dependent RNA polymerase, inhibiting the initiation of RNA synthesis. This blockade prevents transcription of essential genes, leading to bactericidal activity against actively replicating mycobacteria and other susceptible organisms.

Side Effects

Rifampicin may elicit a range of adverse reactions, from mild to severe, depending on individual sensitivity and treatment duration.

Common Side Effects

  • Hepatotoxicity: elevated liver enzymes.
  • Gastrointestinal upset: nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort.
