Otomyk (Clotrimazole)

Otomyk is an antifungal agent that acts on dermatophytes, yeasts and molds associated with superficial infections.

• Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis): reduces itching, scaling and erythema while eliminating the causative fungus.
• Jock itch (tinea cruris): clears the infection and relieves irritation in the groin area.
• Ringworm (tinea corporis): treats the circular lesions and prevents spread to other skin sites.
• Yeast infection of the skin (candidiasis): controls overgrowth of Candida species on affected areas.
• Seborrheic dermatitis associated with Malassezia: improves flaking and redness on the scalp and face.

• Clotrimazole inhibits the fungal enzyme lanosterol 14α‑demethylase, a key step in ergosterol synthesis. By blocking ergosterol production, the drug disrupts the fungal cell membrane structure, increasing permeability and leading to cell death. This selective action targets fungi while sparing human cells, providing effective topical antifungal activity.

Clotrimazole is generally well tolerated, but local reactions may occur.

Common Side Effects

• Burning sensation: mild transient heat at the application site.
• Itching: temporary pruritus after first use.
• Redness: mild erythema of the skin.
• Dryness: skin may feel less moist.
• Peeling: superficial desquamation of treated area.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Systemic absorption leading to hepatic effects: extremely rare with extensive use.

Before using Otomyk, consider the following safety measures:

• Avoid application on broken skin: may increase systemic absorption.
• Do not use on mucous membranes: formulation is intended for external skin only.
• Limit use to prescribed area: excessive coverage can raise irritation risk.
