Indications & Clinical Uses

Oxbryta is used in the management of sickle cell disease, a genetic disorder affecting hemoglobin.

  • Sickle cell disease: Improves hemoglobin levels and reduces hemolysis.
  • Sickle cell-related vaso‑occlusive crises: May lower the frequency of painful episodes.
  • Chronic anemia in sickle cell disease: Contributes to better oxygen transport and quality of life.

How It Works

  • Voxelotor binds selectively to the N‑terminal valine of the hemoglobin beta chain, increasing its affinity for oxygen. This stabilises the oxygen‑loaded form of hemoglobin, reduces polymerisation of sickle hemoglobin (HbS), and thereby decreases red‑cell sickling and hemolysis.
