Indications & Clinical Uses

Oxcarbazepine is indicated for seizure disorders that involve the central nervous system.

  • Partial seizures: Reduces the frequency and severity of focal onset seizures.
  • Generalized tonic‑clonic seizures: Helps control convulsive episodes in patients with this seizure type.
  • Mixed seizure types: Provides adjunctive therapy for patients experiencing both focal and generalized seizures.

How It Works

  • Oxcarbazepine is metabolized to its active moiety, licorice‑like monohydroxy derivative, which blocks voltage‑gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes. This inhibition stabilises hyper‑excitable neuronal membranes and reduces repetitive neuronal firing, thereby decreasing seizure activity in the brain.
