Indications & Clinical Uses

Oxacillin is a beta‑lactam antibiotic used to manage infections caused by penicillin‑resistant Staphylococcus aureus and related organisms.

  • Skin and soft‑tissue infections: Reduces bacterial load and promotes healing.
  • Bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis): Assists in eradicating deep‑seated infection.
  • Respiratory tract infections: Helps clear pneumonia and bronchitis caused by susceptible strains.

How It Works

  • Oxacillin inhibits bacterial cell‑wall synthesis by irreversibly binding to penicillin‑binding proteins, preventing the cross‑linking of peptidoglycan strands. This disruption weakens the bacterial wall, leading to osmotic lysis and bacterial death, particularly against penicillin‑resistant Staphylococcus species.
