Oxis Turbohaler (Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate)

Formoterol fumarate is a LABA that acts on the bronchial smooth‑muscle pathway to improve airflow.

• Asthma: improves long‑term control of symptoms and reduces the frequency of exacerbations.
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): enhances bronchodilation for maintenance therapy and helps reduce breathlessness.
• Exercise‑induced bronchoconstriction: provides sustained bronchodilation that can lessen exercise‑related airway narrowing.

• Formoterol binds selectively to β2‑adrenergic receptors on airway smooth‑muscle cells, activating adenylate cyclase and increasing intracellular cyclic AMP. The rise in cAMP leads to relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, producing prolonged bronchodilation that lasts up to 12 hours after inhalation.

Formoterol may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild to moderate in intensity.

Common Side Effects

• Throat irritation: mild discomfort or scratchiness in the throat.
• Cough: transient coughing immediately after inhalation.
• Headache: mild to moderate headache.
• Tremor: fine muscle tremor, often of the hands.

• Paradoxical bronchospasm: sudden worsening of breathing difficulty.
• Cardiovascular events: arrhythmia, angina, or hypertension.
• Hypokalemia: low blood potassium levels.
• Severe allergic reaction: rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
• Hyperglycaemia: elevated blood glucose in susceptible individuals.
• Throat infection: persistent sore throat or signs of infection.
