Oxybutynin is an antimuscarinic medication used to manage symptoms of overactive bladder and related disorders.

  • Overactive bladder: reduces urinary urgency, frequency and incontinence episodes.
  • Urge urinary incontinence: decreases the number of leakage events during the day.
  • Neurogenic detrusor overactivity: improves bladder storage function in patients with neurological conditions.

How It Works

  • Oxybutynin blocks muscarinic M3 receptors in the detrusor muscle of the bladder, inhibiting acetylcholine‑mediated contractions. By reducing parasympathetic stimulation, it decreases involuntary bladder contractions, allowing the bladder to fill at higher volumes before the urge to void is triggered. The drug is absorbed orally, undergoes hepatic metabolism, and active metabolites contribute to the overall anticholinergic effect.
