Indications & Clinical Uses

Oxytetracycline is a tetracycline‑class antibiotic that acts against a wide range of bacterial pathogens in veterinary medicine.

  • Respiratory infections: helps reduce clinical signs and bacterial load in bovine and porcine pneumonia.
  • Metabolic disorders such as foot‑and‑mouth disease: aids in controlling secondary bacterial complications.
  • Septicemia and systemic infections: contributes to bacterial clearance in acute systemic disease.
  • Eye infections (keratoconjunctivitis): assists in eliminating ocular bacterial pathogens.
  • Gastrointestinal infections: supports recovery from colibacillary diarrhoea in young animals.

How It Works

  • Oxytetracycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the attachment of amino‑acyl‑tRNA to the mRNA‑ribosome complex. This action blocks peptide chain elongation, resulting in a bacteriostatic effect against susceptible Gram‑positive and Gram‑negative organisms.

Side Effects

Oxytetracycline may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are dose‑dependent and reversible.

Common Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal upset: nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea.
  • Local irritation at the injection site: pain, redness or swelling.
  • Mild hepatic enzyme elevation.
  • Transient photosensitivity.
  • Hypersensitivity rash.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Anaphylactic reaction: sudden airway swelling, hypotension or urticaria.
  • Severe hepatic dysfunction: jaundice, elevated transaminases.
  • Hemolytic anemia: sudden drop in red‑cell count.
  • Nephrotoxicity: acute kidney injury with oliguria.
  • Clostridium difficile‑associated colitis.
  • Persistent neutropenia.

Precautions & Warnings

When using Oxytetracycline, careful assessment and monitoring are recommended.

  • Renal impairment: adjust dose or extend interval in animals with reduced kidney function.
  • Hepatic dysfunction: monitor liver enzymes during prolonged therapy.
  • Pregnancy and lactation: use only if clearly needed, weighing fetal risk.
  • Age restrictions: avoid in very young animals unless specifically indicated.
  • Drug‑resistance monitoring: perform susceptibility testing where possible.
  • Store below 25°C: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
