Indications & Clinical Uses

Oxytocin Grindeks is a peptide hormone used in obstetric practice to stimulate uterine activity.

  • Induction of labor: Facilitates cervical ripening and uterine contractions to initiate vaginal delivery.
  • Management of postpartum hemorrhage: Promotes uterine contraction to reduce bleeding after childbirth.
  • Medical termination of pregnancy: Assists in expelling uterine contents when used with prostaglandins.
  • Intrauterine device (IUI) procedures: Enhances uterine contractility to improve embryo transfer success.
  • Obstetric surgery support: Provides uterine tone during cesarean section or other uterine surgeries.

How It Works

  • Oxytocin binds to oxytocin receptors on uterine smooth‑muscle cells, activating a G‑protein coupled cascade that increases intracellular calcium. The rise in calcium triggers myometrial contraction, enhancing uterine tone and facilitating cervical dilation. The hormone also promotes milk ejection by acting on myoepithelial cells in the breast.

Side Effects

Oxytocin may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are dose‑dependent and related to its uterotonic activity.

Common Side Effects

  • Nausea: Mild to moderate nausea may occur during infusion.
  • Vomiting: May accompany nausea, especially with rapid administration.
  • Headache: Transient headache is reported in some patients.
  • Uterine hyperstimulation: Excessive contractions can reduce fetal oxygenation.
  • Flushing: Warm sensation and skin flushing may be observed.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Cardiac arrhythmia: Rarely, rapid infusion can provoke tachyarrhythmias.
  • Myocardial ischemia: Excessive uterine demand may precipitate cardiac ischemia in susceptible individuals.
  • Pulmonary edema: Rare fluid overload may occur with large fluid volumes.
  • Severe allergic reaction: Anaphylaxis or severe hypersensitivity is extremely uncommon.
  • Uterine rupture: Over‑distended uterus with strong contractions can lead to rupture.
  • Hypotension: Sudden vasodilation may cause low blood pressure.

Precautions & Warnings

Oxytocin should be closely monitored throughout administration.

  • Fetal heart rate: Continuous  monitor  to  detect  distress  or  decelerations  of                       .
