Midazolam acts as a central‑acting sedative‑hypnotic that works through the GABA system for procedural and critical care situations.

  • Anxiety: Reduces acute anxiety symptoms before procedures.

  • Pre‑operative pre‑medication: Induces sedation and amnesia before surgery.

How It Works

  • Midazolam enhances the inhibitory effect of the neurotransmitter gamma‑aminobutyric acid (GABA) by binding to a specific site on the GABA‑A receptor complex. This positive allosteric modulation increases chloride ion influx, hyper‑polarising neuronal membranes and producing sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant and amnestic effects.
