Indications & Clinical Uses

Pantoprazol Beta belongs to the proton pump inhibitor class and is indicated for acid‑related gastrointestinal disorders.

  • Gastro‑oesophageal reflux disease (GERD): provides symptomatic relief and promotes healing of the oesophageal lining.
  • Erosive oesophagitis: accelerates healing of erosive lesions in the oesophagus.
  • Peptic ulcer disease: supports ulcer healing and reduces risk of recurrence.

How It Works

  • Pantoprazole selectively inhibits the H+/K+‑ATPase enzyme (the gastric proton pump) on the parietal cell surface, blocking the final step of acid secretion. This results in a sustained increase in gastric pH, allowing damaged mucosa to heal and reducing acid‑related symptoms.

Side Effects

Pantoprazole is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

  • Headache: mild to moderate intensity.
  • Diarrhoea: usually self‑limiting.
  • Nausea: occasional and transient.
  • Abdominal pain: mild discomfort.
  • Flatulence: excess gas.
  • Constipation: infrequent.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis): skin rash, swelling, difficulty breathing.
  • Clostridioides difficile infection: watery, bloody stools.
  • Acute interstitial nephritis: kidney inflammation.
  • Low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia): muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat.
  • Fracture risk increased: especially with long‑term use.
