Pantoprazol Noridem (Pantoprazole)

Pantoprazol Noridem is a proton pump inhibitor that acts on the gastric acid secretion pathway. It is indicated for several acid‑related disorders:

• Gastro‑oesophageal reflux disease (GERD): provides symptomatic relief and promotes healing of erosive esophagitis.
• Erosive oesophageal ulcer: accelerates healing of ulcers in the oesophagus.
• Peptic ulcer disease (duodenal and gastric): supports ulcer healing and reduces recurrence.
• Zollinger‑Ellison syndrome: controls excessive gastric acid secretion.
• NSAID‑induced ulcer prophylaxis: lowers risk of ulcer development in at‑risk patients.

• Pantoprazole selectively inhibits the H+/K+‑ATPase enzyme (the gastric proton pump) located on the secretory surface of parietal cells. By binding irreversibly to this pump, it blocks the final step of acid secretion, leading to a sustained reduction in gastric acidity and allowing damaged mucosa to heal.

Pantoprazol Noridem is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

• Headache: mild to moderate intensity.
• Diarrhoea: usually self‑limiting.
• Nausea: occasional and transient.
• Abdominal pain: mild discomfort.
• Flatulence: excess gas.
• Constipation: infrequent.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis): rash, swelling, difficulty breathing.
• Clostridioides difficile infection: persistent diarrhoea, fever.
• Low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia): muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat.
• Bone fractures: increased risk with long‑term use.
• Acute interstitial nephritis: kidney inflammation.
• Liver enzyme elevation: signs of hepatitis.

Pantoprazol Noridem may require special consideration in certain patient groups.

• Renal impairment: dose adjustment may be needed.
• Hepatic impairment: monitor liver function.
• Elderly patients: assess fall risk due to potential electrolyte changes.
• Concomitant use with clopidogrel: may reduce antiplatelet effect.
• Pregnancy and lactation: use only if clearly needed.
