Indications & Clinical Uses

Pantoprazol Recordati is a proton pump inhibitor that acts on the gastric acid secretion pathway. It is indicated for several acid‑related conditions:

  • Gastro‑oesophageal reflux disease (GERD): provides symptomatic relief and promotes healing of the oesophageal lining.
  • Erosive oesophagitis: accelerates mucosal healing and reduces further erosion.
  • Zollinger‑Ellison syndrome: controls excessive gastric acid production associated with the condition.
  • Peptic ulcer disease: supports ulcer healing and prevents recurrence.
  • Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens (as part of combination therapy): enhances eradication success when used with antibiotics.

How It Works

  • Pantoprazole selectively inhibits the H+/K+‑ATPase enzyme (the gastric proton pump) located on the secretory surface of parietal cells. By binding covalently to the pump's sulfhydryl group, it blocks the final step of acid production, leading to a prolonged reduction in gastric acidity and an elevated gastric pH.

Side Effects

Pantoprazol Recordati is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

  • Headache: mild to moderate intensity.
  • Diarrhoea: usually transient.
  • Nausea: occasional and self‑limiting.
  • Abdominal pain: mild discomfort.
  • Flatulence: excess gas.
  • Constipation: infrequent.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis): requires immediate medical attention.
  • Clostridioides difficile infection: may present with watery diarrhoea.
  • Low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia): can cause muscle cramps or cardiac arrhythmia.
  • Bone fracture risk: associated with long‑term use.
  • Acute interstitial nephritis: renal inflammation.
  • Liver enzyme elevation: may indicate hepatic stress.

Precautions & Warnings

When prescribing Pantoprazol Recordati, clinicians should consider several safety aspects.

  • Assess risk of renal or hepatic impairment: dose adjustment may be needed.
  • Monitor for potential drug interactions: especially with drugs that require acidic pH for absorption.
  • Evaluate long‑term use implications: consider bone health assessment if therapy exceeds 1 year.
  • Use caution in pregnancy and breast‑feeding women : weigh the benefits against the potential risk to the fetus or infant.
  • Store at below 25°C: keep in the original pack , protect against moist
