Iodină (Povidone, Iodinated)

Iodină is an antiseptic that acts on a broad range of microorganisms to achieve skin decontamination.

• Skin antisepsis: Reduces microbial load on intact or broken skin prior to procedures.
• Wound cleaning: Helps cleanse minor cuts, abrasions and burns to lower infection risk.
• Preoperative skin preparation: Provides rapid antiseptic action on the surgical site before incision.

• Povidone‑iodine releases free iodine, which penetrates microbial cell walls and inactivates proteins and nucleic acids through iodination and oxidation. This rapid chemical disruption leads to loss of cellular function and death of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa, providing broad‑spectrum antiseptic activity on the skin and wound surfaces.

Iodină may cause local reactions when applied to the skin.

Common Side Effects

• Skin irritation: mild burning or stinging at the application site.
• Redness: transient erythema around the treated area.
• Itching: occasional pruritus following application.
• Staining: temporary brown discoloration of skin or fabrics.
• Allergic contact dermatitis: localized rash in iodine‑sensitive individuals.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction: anaphylaxis or angioedema requiring immediate medical attention.
• Chemical burns: deep tissue injury with prolonged or excessive exposure.
• Thyroid dysfunction: systemic iodine absorption may affect thyroid hormone balance.
• Systemic toxicity: rare, especially with large surface area application.
• Delayed wound healing: excessive iodine may impair tissue regeneration.

Before using Iodină, consider the following safety measures.

• Allergy assessment: Verify no known iodine or povidone‑iodine hypersensitivity.
• Open wounds: Avoid extensive application on large open wounds or deep burns.
• Mucous membranes: Do not apply to eyes, ears, nose or genital mucosa.
• Thyroid disorders: Use with caution in patients with hyper‑ or hypothyroidism.
• Duration of use: Limit exposure time and avoid repeated applications on the same area.
• Store at room temperature: Keep the container tightly closed, protect from light and moisture.

Iodină may interact with other iodine‑containing products or therapies.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Concurrent thyroid hormone therapy: May alter iodine balance and affect hormone levels.
• Use with other iodine‑containing medications or supplements: Increases risk of iodine overload.
• Radiocontrast agents: Combined iodine exposure can lead to systemic toxicity.
