Iodină (Povidone, Iodinated)

Iodină (povidone‑iodine) is a broad‑spectrum antiseptic used on the skin to eliminate microorganisms.

• Skin antisepsis: reduces microbial load on intact skin before invasive procedures.
• Wound cleaning: helps cleanse contaminated wounds and promotes a sterile environment.
• Pre‑operative skin preparation: prepares the surgical site by providing rapid, lasting antiseptic action.

• Povidone‑iodine releases free iodine when applied to the skin. The elemental iodine penetrates microbial cell walls, oxidizing proteins, nucleic acids and fatty acids, which leads to rapid denaturation of cellular components and loss of metabolic function, resulting in bacterial, viral, fungal and protozoal death. The iodine is bound to the povidone polymer, which acts as a carrier that slowly releases iodine, maintaining effective concentrations over several minutes.

Topical application of povidone‑iodine may be associated with the following adverse reactions.

Common Side Effects

• Skin irritation: mild redness or discomfort at the application site.
• Staining of skin or clothing: temporary brown discoloration that fades with washing.
• Mild itching or burning sensation: transient sensation that usually resolves quickly.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis): rapid onset of systemic symptoms requiring emergency care.
• Thyroid dysfunction (hypo‑ or hyperthyroidism): altered thyroid hormone levels after extensive use.
• Chemical burns on extensive application: tissue damage when applied to large areas or damaged skin.

When using Iodină, consider the following safety measures.

• Avoid use on extensive burns: the product may exacerbate tissue injury.
• Do not apply to mucous membranes or open eyes: risk of irritation and damage.
• Check for known iodine allergy before use: discontinue if hypersensitivity is observed.
• Use with caution in patients with thyroid disorders: iodine absorption can affect thyroid function.
• Do not use on compromised skin integrity without medical supervision: ensure proper wound assessment.
• Store at room temperature: keep in the original container, protect from light and moisture.
